Fourth podium of the season in the United Arab Emirates
A podium is definitely a good way to end a season of highs and lows. On Saturday I took second place on the Yas Marina track, behind GP2 leader and championship winner, Belgium’s Stoffel Vandoorne. I’ve felt at ease since qualifying and I knew I could perform well in the race. I started fifth on the grid and immediately fell back to tenth place, but I kept my cool and didn’t give up: I sprinted up to first place, making the most of a clever race strategy. On lap 27 I finally changed my tires and came back six seconds behind Vandoorne. The situation didn’t change during the last laps – I managed the car effectively and was able to grab my fourth podium of the season. Yas Marina’s result marks my best performance of this year’s GP2 alongside the second place I took at Silverstone. In the end the strategy we’ve chosen – a late pit-stop – has proven to be the right one. Winning was not a realistic possibility, so I am happy with second place. After this race I can say I’m satisfied with the steady improvement I’ve shoved, both in terms of results and performances. However I can’t say the same about the season as a whole: in more than a few races I could and should have taken more points, but because of several reasons it didn’t happen. Still, I obtained four podiums and collected points in 14 races, finishing seventh in the championship standings. Which is not too bad.
A few words about race two, which has been a “sprint race” in every sense of the word as it was over after a few turns: a crash involving several car caused damages to the guard rails, and since the repairs would have taken too long, the race was canceled. The 2015 GP2 championship ended with a red flag.
I will try to properly take stock of my season in a few days, after allowing myself some time to reflect.

Quarto podio stagionale negli Emirati Arabi
Concludere la stagione con un podio è stata davvero un’eccellente operazione. Sabato sul circuito di Yas Marina (Emirati Arabi) ho chiuso al 2º posto, battuto soltanto dal dominatore della GP2 e vincitore del titolo, il belga Stoffel Vandoorne.
Mi sono sentito a mio agio già a partire dalle qualifiche del venerdì ed ero convinto di poter far bene in gara. Partito in quinta posizione, mi si sono però ritrovato attorno al 10º posto dopo pochi metri, ma senza perdermi d’animo sono risalito al 1º posto, sfruttando anche un’intelligente strategia di gara.
Al 27º giro anch’io ho cambiato le gomme, rientrando alle spalle di Vandoorne e concedendogli 6 secondi. Nelle ultime tornate la situazione non è cambiata, ho gestito la macchina con tranquillità e ho centrato il quarto podio stagionale, bissando, con questo secondo posto, la mia miglior prestazione dell’anno.
La strategia, a conti fatti, è stata quella giusta. Sono rimasto fuori più degli altri, ma alla fine, visto il secondo posto, è chiaro che la scelta era quella migliore. Vincere non era oggettivamente possibile. Dopo questa gara mi posso considerare contento perché sono cresciuto con costanza e ho ottenuto dei buoni risultati. Se guardo alla stagione nel suo insieme non posso invece essere del tutto soddisfatto: ci sono state diverse gare in chi potevo e dovevo raccogliere più punti, ma per motivi vari non è stato il caso. Sono comunque andato quattro volte sul podio e sono finito 14 volte in zona punti, chiudendo 7º nella generale. Tutto sommato non male.
Due note di cronaca anche per gara-2, una corsa sprint nel vero senso della parola visto che la stessa è durata un paio di curve: un incidente ha coinvolto diverse macchine e i danni provocati alle barriere di sicurezza non erano riparabili in tempi brevi e pertanto la corsa è stata annullata. Il campionato di GP2 si è quindi chiuso con una bandiera rossa.
Un bilancio della mi stagione? Mi prendo qualche giorno per riflettere, poi ne riparliamo…
