Some good Points in Silverstone

Raffaele Marciello ended his Silverstone GP2 weekend with a ninth and sixth place in the bag. These results allow him to stay involved in the fight for the 2016 championship, as the standings show the first seven drivers crammed into 15 points. “Silverstone is one of the tracks that the team and I fear the most” said Raffaele after the weekend, “because the shape of the track doesn’t favour the characteristics of our car. But in the end we cannot be dissatisfied with the result: we brought home points in each race. The weekend started pretty well, I had a good lap in qualifying and registered the fourth time.”

Race one’s result was influenced by a mix of flawed race strategy and tire degradation. “We were unlucky” Raffaele explains, “because our strategy proved to be far from perfect. My pit stop took place three laps after what, with hindsight, would have been the ideal moment, and I lost my chance to fight for the fifth place – which I feel would have been within my reach. Race one’s result also penalised me in the sense that I had to start from the fifth row in the second race. Luckily, I was still able to get points.”

With the Silverstone ordeal in the rear view mirror, a new track awaits Raffaele, one where the feeling with the car shouldn’t be a problem: “The big unknown in Budapest will be the new asphalt, which has been laid down recently. But the configuration of the track will be a much better fit for our car. We will go back to a “traditional” degradation of the rear tires, which we can handle pretty well, whereas in Silverstone we suffered the deterioration of the front left tire’s condition. At Hungaroring I hope I will be back to the level of performance shown in Baku and Spielberg.”

The Hungarian stage will take place in two weeks in Budapest and will mark the midpoint of the 2016 championship. For Raffaele, who sits only seven points below the top of the standings, everything is still possible.

Buoni punti a Silverstone
