A DRIVE-THROUGH COSTS MARCIELLO THE PODIUM IN THE FIRST BLANCPAIN ENDURANCE RACE OF 2018

The first stage of the 2018 Endurance series of the Blancpain GT championship took place in Monza over the course of last weekend. On Saturday Raffaele Marciello, alongside new teammates Daniel Jucandella and Tristan Vautier, got behind the wheel of AKKA ASP Team’s Mercedes AMG GT3 no. 88 for the free practice sessions – with mixed results. While the race pace was acceptable, the gap between their times and those registered by the Audis, Ferraris, and Lamborghinis was too big. The team didn’t lose heart, and worked hard with the engineers to be more competitive in qualifying. This year, the starting order of the race will be determined by calculating the average time scored by the three drivers in Q1, Q2, and Q3. Vautier struggled in his session, but Jucandella and Marciello patched things up in Q2 and Q3, placing the Mercedes in eleventh place – a good result considered the high number of competitors: 54.
The three-hour race took place on Sunday, with Marciello in charge of AKKA ASP’s first stint. The Ticino driver was careful to avoid mistakes and collisions in the first few laps, but once the track cleared up, he unleashed an all-out attack that propelled him to sixth. Vautier gained two more positions and set his sights on the top three, before an unlucky contact that sent a slower Lamborghini into a tailspin got him a drive-through sanction. The Mercedes fell back to eleventh place – right where it stated from – and all Jucandella could in the last hour was to keep it there. A shame, but looking at the glass half full, the three drivers have showed they have the potential to compete for the top positions. Also, Marciello was able to show his skills in front of the many guests – more than 300 between family, friends and sponsors – present at his hospitality, cheering for him and supporting him during the race.
Marciello will be back in action in two weeks, for the Sprint series, at the Brands Hatch track.
