ANOTHER GREAT SEASON FOR RAFFAELE, WHO ONCE AGAIN PROVES TO BE ONE OF THE INTERNATIONAL GT SCENE’S BEST DRIVERS
Despite the Covid emergency, the 2020 racing season saw Raffaele taking part in more than 20 races over a period of 6 months.
The Intercontinental GT Challenge started in Australia in February with the 12H of Bathrust, but Mercedes-AMG’s drivers didn’t participate in the Suzuka, Indianapolis, and Kyalami stages.
In the GT World Challenge Sprint, Raffaele finished third in the drivers’ championship thanks to the following results:
– Misano: Victory, Pole Position and Fast Lap.
– Magny Course: Victory, Pole Position and Fast Lap.
– Barcelona (three races in the same race weekend): Victory, Second Place, Third Place, Pole Position and Fast Lap.
Marciello missed Zandvoort (which could have helped him triumph in the drivers’ championship) due to his commitment to the 24H of Nurburgring, one of the most important Endurance races of the year. Raffaele was leading that race with 12H to go and had gathered an advantage of 1 minute, but a problem with the brakes forced him to retire. While preparing for the 24H, Marciello also competed in a few races at Nordschleife, in the NLS series, and obtained a victory.
In the GT World Challenge Endurance, Raffaele finished fifth in the drivers’ championship, and achieved the following results:
– Imola: Third.
– Nurburgring: Second.
– 24H Spa-Francorchamps: Pole Position and lead position during more than 12H (thus obtaining intermediate points) with a one minute lead over the second before having to retire due to a broken left front wheel hub.
In the GT World Challenge (Endurance and Sprint combined), Raffaele finished fifth in the drivers’ championship. In the Sprint category, Marciello competed in every race alongside Russian driver Bogukolavsky, who won the title thanks to the point obtained at Zandvoort – in which Marciello didn’t participate. Had he competed there too, he would probably have been crowned champion.
In the Adac GT Masters Marciello struggled because of the lack of competitiveness of the team he raced for. The only positive result was achieved at Oschersleben, where Marciello obtained a third place, a victory and a pole position.
At the beginning of December, a last minute call brought Raffaele to Vallelunga (Italy), where he finished third twice in the last stage of the Italian GT championship.
Marciello can look back with pride at a positive season, one in which he could have won a title if it weren’t for the Zandvoort situation, and most important, one in which he showcased an impressive race pace in the most important events of the year, such as the 24H of Nurburgring and the 24H of Spa-Francorchamps.

RESOCONTO STAGIONE 2020 – RAFFAELE MARCIELLO
OTTIMA STAGIONE PER RAFFAELE CHE SI E’ DIMOSTRATO ANCORA UNA VOLTA IL PILOTA DI RIFERIMENTO NEL PANORAMA INTERNAZIONALE GT
Si è conclusa la stagione 2020 di Raffaele Marciello che, nonostante l’emergenza Covid, é riuscito a prendere parte a più di 20 gare compresse da metà anno ad oggi.
A Febbraio in Australia, alla Bathrust 12H, era iniziato il campionato Intercontinental GT Challenge che però non è proseguito nelle tappe successive di Suzuka, Indianapolis e Kyalami per i portacolori di Mercedes-AMG.
Circa il GT World Challenge Sprint, Raffaele é arrivato Terzo nel campionato assoluto piloti con particolare attenzione ai seguenti piazzamenti:
-Misano: Vittoria, Pole Position e giro veloce
-Magny Course: Vittoria, Pole Position e giro veloce
-Barcellona (tre corse nel medesimo week-end di gara): Vittoria, Secondo posto, Terzo posto, Pole Position e Giro Veloce
Nell’appuntamento di Zandvoort, Raffaele Marciello non ha corso (compromettendo, a posteriori, la vittoria del campionato assoluto GT World Challenge) per prendere parte alla 24H del Nurburgring, scelta strategica imposta da Mercedes-AMG, essendo la 24H del Nurburgring uno degli appuntamenti più importanti a livello mondiale per le gare Endurance. Durante la corsa, Raffaele era in prima posizione dopo più di 12H di gara con più di un minuto di vantaggio sul secondo classificato, prima che la gara terminasse nella notte a causa di una noia ai freni che ha costretto al ritiro. In preparazione alla 24H del Nurburgring, Marciello ha corso anche alcune gare sul Nordschleife della serie NLS con una Vittoria.
Nel GT World Challenge Endurance, Raffaele é arrivato Quinto nel campionato assoluto piloti con particolare attenzione ai seguenti piazzamenti:
-Imola: Terzo
-Nurburgring: Secondo
-24H Spa-Francorchamps: Pole Position e prima posizione per più di 12H di gara (prendendo i punti intermedi in questa posizione) con circa un minuto di vantaggio sul secondo prima del ritiro a causa della rottura del mozzo della ruota anteriore sinistra.
Nel GT World Challenge Assoluto, unione delle serie Sprint ed Endurance, Marciello è dunque arrivato Terzo nel campionato piloti; da sottolineare che in tutte le gare Sprint ed
Endurance di questa serie Raffaele ha condiviso la macchina con il pilota Russo Bogukolavsky che si è proclamato Campione proprio grazie ai pochi punti fatti segnare durante l’appuntamento di Zandvoort a cui Marciello non ha preso parte. Possiamo così dire che è stata una vittoria del titolo sfumata quella di Raffaele Marciello.
Per finire nell’Adac GT Masters ha corso un campionato un po’ in salita a causa di un Team poco competitivo che gli ha portato ad avere solo il seguente piazzamento di spessore:
-Oschersleben (due gare): Terzo posto, Vittoria e pole position
Ad inizio Dicembre, con una chiamata last minute, Raffaele ha preso parte anche all’ultimo appuntamento del Campionato Italiano GT presso il circuito di Vallelunga dove ha concluso il week-end con due terzi posti.
Un bilancio dunque più che positivo per la stagione 2020 di Marciello che, senza la gara persa di Zandvoort, avrebbe potuto tranquillamente laurearsi campione assoluto del GT World Challenge e, cosa molto importante, ha dimostrato un passo gara da vero mattatore negli appuntamenti più importanti dell’anno quali la 24H del Nurburgring e quella di Spa-Francorchamps.
