INTERCONTINENTAL GT CHALLENGE – KYALAMI 9H
A POLE AND A FIFTH PLACE FOR MARCIELLO IN SOUTH AFRICA
After finishing third in Bathurst (Australia), Marciello joined Team GruppeM in South Africa to compete in the 9H of Kylami – the second stage of the Intercontinental GT Challenge.
After Thursday’s private tests, the team continued to work hard until qualifying, where Marciello and teammates Engel (Germany) and Grenier (Canada) dominated: their average times placed the yellow-green Mercedes AMG GT3 no 999 on the first spot on the grid.
In the race, Engel drove first but struggled to contain the superior power of the two BMW on his tail, and slipped back to third. Grenier, up next, fought hard to keep the position against the Audi in fourth, and Marciello did the same despite an electronic problem that kept causing unpredictable blackouts. He handed the wheel back to Grenier, who got on the track in fourth and lost a further position. Engel then had to cope with gearbox problems, until the car got stuck in third and fourth gear. With a race pace now far behind that of their rivals, Grenier soldiered on, but was forced to retire with two hours to go, and finished fifth: having completed more than 70% of the race, the result was still valid.
Raffaele, after six consecutive racing weekends in five different continents, can now enjoy a few days of well deserved rest.
He will be back on the track in the next weeks to prepare for the European season, which will begin in April.

POLE POSITION E QUINTO POSTO FINALE PER MARCIELLO IN SUDAFRICA
Dopo il terzo posto in terra Australiana alla 12H di Bathurst, lo squadrone giallo verde del Team GruppeM si è diretto in fretta e furia in Sud Africa per il secondo appuntamento dell’Intercontinental GT Challenge. La 9H di Kyalami ha visto al via il Factory driver Mercedes AMG Raffaele Marciello assieme ai compagni Engel e Grenier a bordo della Mercedes AMG GT3 numero 999.
Il tracciato Sud Africano ha visto immediatamente la squadra al lavoro sin dal giovedì, giornata di test privati. I lavori sono poi proseguiti nei giorni successivi sino ad arrivare alla prova di qualificazione. Nella prova di qualificazione, per la quale il risultato finale é stato dettato dalla media dei tempi fatti segnare dai piloti nelle rispettive sessioni, la Mercedes AMG GT3 numero 999 si é posizionata in pole position, dominando tutte e tre le sessioni con tutti e tre i piloti al volante.
Nella gara, dalla durata di nove ore, il via é stato preso da Engel che nei primi giri non ha potuto arginare lo strapotere delle BMW alle spalle scivolando in terza posizione. Lasciato il volante a Grenier, il Canadese ha mantenuto a fatica la terza piazza. Salito Marciello, il Ticinese é riuscito ad arginare le pressioni dell’Audi alle spalle nonostante un problema all’elettronica della vettura che la mandava in blackout per alcuni istanti in maniera totalmente casuale e ripetuta. Risalito Grenier, il Canadese é rientrato in pista in quarta posizione ed é sceso poi in quinta piazza, lasciando il volante a Engel. Il Tedesco ha dovuto affrontare anche notevoli problemi al cambio che si é poi definitivamente bloccato in terza e quarta marcia. Ormai con un passo completamente lontano dagli antagonisti, la gara é continuata con Grenier che a circa due ore dal termine é stato costretto al ritiro chiudendo così la corsa in quinta posizione avendo coperto almeno il settanta percento della stessa.
Terminato questo appuntamento, qualche giorno di meritato riposto per Raffaele Marciello che é stato impegnato da ben sei week end consecutivi sparsi sui cinque continenti.
Il Ticinese ritornerà in pista nelle prossime settimane per alcuni Test in preparazione della stagione agonistica Europea che prenderà inizio da Aprile.
