BAD WEATHER IMPACTS RAFFAELE’S DONINGTON PERFORMANCE
Last weekend, Raffaele traveled to the Donington Park (England) to race in the fourth stage of the British GP 2024. Marciello’s teammate Ferguson drove in the first qualifying session and finished 13th, with a time of 1:27.235. It was then Raffaele’s turn to get behind the wheel of team RAM Racing’s BMW M4 GT3 #15: he scored and impressive 1:27.235 time (a mere 1/10th above leader’s time), finishing the second qualifying session in third place. The sum of the two drivers’ times placed the #15 in 7th place on the starting grid.
The race, sadly, was plagued by dramatic weather changes. With a safety car deployed right at the beginning, Ferguson elected to immediately use the first of the three mandatory driver changes to hand the wheel to Marciello. The Swiss got back on the track in first, and through a series of fast laps he managed leave the main group behind. As the weather cleared, Marciello was the last to enter the box, and after the tire change, Ferguson found himself in 21st place. The rain, however, picked up again, turning into a thunderstorm that forced the organisers to bring out the red flag. Ferguson, who had exited the race when the rain increased (as had other drivers), had a three laps delay when the flag was lifted – which thwarted all hopes of a positive result. Raffaele got back in the driver’s seat with one hour to go, in 21st place. Despite having to go back to the box for another tire change (the track had become dry again), he managed to finish 17th – the last of the GT3 cars to cross the finish line.
Thus, the duo didn’t add any points to their total (15 points) and fell back to 7th place in the standings; they are also 7th in the PRO-AM standings, with 27 points. They will have an opportunity to bounce back on June 23rd at Spa-Francorchamps, where the next stage of the British GP will take place.
RAFFAELE MARCIELLO COMPLETA UNA GARA TORMENTATA DAL MALTEMPO A DONINGTON
Sul circuito di Donington Park è andato in scena il quarto appuntamento del British GT 2024. Raffaele Marciello ha preso parte all’evento insieme al britannico John Ferguson alla guida della BMW M4 GT3 #15 del team RAM Racing. Come nel round precedente svoltosi a Silverstone, il
format del weekend prevede una singola gara della durata di tre ore preceduta da due sessioni di qualifica da cui è stata estratta la somma dei tempi di entrambi i piloti dell’equipaggio per stabilire la griglia di partenza.
Il team ha scelto Ferguson per la prima sessione; il britannico ha concluso in 13esima posizione con il tempo di 1:27.235. Marciello è sceso in pista per la seconda fase di qualifica, ottenendo uno splendido terzo posto grazie a un 1:25.029, a poco più di mezzo decimo dalla miglior prestazione. La somma dei tempi ha consentito al team di partire dalla quarta fila, in settima posizione.
In gara il meteo non è stato clemente. A prendere il via per la BMW #15 è stato Ferguson, che ha sfruttato la safety car iniziale per rientrare ai box e affidare subito la macchina a Marciello,
scartando il primo dei tre cambi pilota obbligatori. Il pilota svizzero è rientrato in pista appena davanti al leader della corsa, ma è riuscito a inanellare molti giri veloci staccandosi dal gruppo. Dopo venti minuti dall’inizio della gara, la pioggia ha smesso di cadere e il tracciato era pronto per le gomme da asciutto. Marciello è stato l’ultimo pilota a fermarsi ai box e ha restituito la vettura al britannico in 21esima posizione.
Sfortunatamente, una leggera pioggia ha cominciato a cadere sul circuito, diventando poi un temporale che ha costretto la direzione gara a imporre la bandiera rossa per fermare la gara. Purtroppo Ferguson è stato uno dei piloti usciti di pista quando la pioggia è incrementata e alla ripartenza la BMW di RAM Racing si trovava a tre giri di ritardo, diminuendo drasticamente le
possibilità di un risultato positivo. Marciello è tornato al volante quando sul cronometro mancava un’ora alla fine della corsa, in 21esima posizione. Il tracciato si è nuovamente asciugato nell’ultimo stint e Marciello è rientrato ai box un’ultima volta per montare gomme da asciutto, terminando la gara in 17esima posizione, ultimo tra le vetture GT3 arrivate al traguardo.
Il team non è riuscito a ottenere punti in classifica, dove ora si trova in settima posizione con 15 lunghezze. In classifica PRO-AM, i due piloti sono in settima posizione a quota 27. Il prossimo appuntamento con il British GT è il 23 giugno sul circuito belga di Spa-Francorchamps.
