Nürburgring: Last stage of the Sprint Series for Raffaele Marciello

After five races, the Sprint Series of the Blancpain GT Championship has come to an end: the last stage, which took place on the Nurburgring track (Germany), has been plagued with complications. Right from the first free sessions it was evident that the Mercedes AMG GT3 Number 90 – with the usual duo Marciello/Meadows at the wheel – couldn’t keep the pace with its rivals, and that the BOP (balance of performance) would be the biggest obstacle to overcome (an handicapped shared with all the other Mercedes). By Saturday, the BOP had been changed to grant the Mercedes a better chance during the qualifying sessions – which followed the habitual Q1, Q2, and Q3 formula. Meadows, who didn’t shine as bright as usual during the whole weekend, finished twelfth, while Marciello was able to grab a fifth placement only to get stopped by the red flag during his fastest lap. In Q3, Raffaele finished ninth thanks to another great performance (only one other Mercedes driver was able to do better).
On Saturday Marciello sprinted flawlessly from ninth and found himself in fourth, behind a trio of Audis and Lamborghinis. He then lost a position but kept up with the cars in front. He handed the wheel to Meadows with 30 minutes to go. Sadly a slow pit stop cost the British driver five places, and he wasn’t able to recover; to make things worst, a tailspin sent him back to thirteenth place – a disappointing result, especially considered that the podium had been within reach.
On Sunday Meadows started from twelfth, but soon found himself in sixteenth. Marciello took the wheel 30 minuted before the end of the race: he kept a good pace – matching that of the drivers in the lead – but the density of the cars in front of him made overtaking almost impossible. Marciello still was able to climb two positions, and finished fourteenth.
A big, heartfelt thank you goes to the “Lello Fan Club” that came all the way to Germany to support and cheer for Raffaele.
Now that the Sprint series has come to an end there is only one stage left : Barcelona, which will take place on September 29th-October 1st and mark the conclusion of the Endurance Series.
