AN UNUSUAL NÜRBURGRING RACE FOR RAFFAELE MARCIELLO

The GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup returned to the Nürburgring for the penultimate round of the 2026 season. Raffaele Marciello represented ROWE Racing behind the wheel of the #98 BMW M4 GT3 EVO, sharing the car with Augusto Farfus and Jake Dennis, at the circuit where the German team’s crew had claimed victory last season.

The weekend got off to the best possible start for Marciello, who put the #98 BMW at the top of the timesheets in Saturday’s first free practice session. The Swiss driver stopped the clock at 1:54.855, just 0.115 seconds ahead of the #111 McLaren, confirming from the outset the competitiveness of the ROWE Racing car over a single lap.

Sunday morning’s qualifying session proved more challenging. The average of the times set by Farfus, Dennis and Marciello was 1:54.558, leaving the #98 BMW M4 GT3 EVO in 22nd place on the starting grid. The crew was therefore forced to tackle the three-hour race with the objective of making up ground on an extremely competitive grid where the gaps were very small.

After a good start and a number of positions gained during the early stages, the #98 BMW was unable to maintain the same pace it had shown in free practice. With the chances of achieving a strong result becoming increasingly limited, ROWE Racing opted for an alternative strategy, extending the final stint and delaying the pit stop for as long as possible.

The strategy temporarily moved Marciello into the lead of the race in the closing stages. However, first place did not reflect the true classification, as Lello still had to complete his mandatory pit stop. ROWE Racing therefore continued to extend the stint in the hope that a Full Course Yellow or Safety Car period would allow the #98 BMW to make its stop while losing less time and rejoin the fight for the top positions.

The hoped-for neutralisation never came, however, and Marciello was forced to pit in the closing stages. The stop inevitably erased all the positions gained through the strategy, and the #98 BMW finished the Nürburgring 3 Hours in 38th place overall, although it completed 83 laps — the same number as the race winner.

The final result does not reflect the expectations of Marciello and ROWE Racing, particularly after the pace shown in free practice. The team tried until the very end to turn around a difficult race with an aggressive strategic gamble, but the neutralisation that could have completely changed the outcome never arrived.
