Sepang, last minute call and great performance!

Last week, Raffaele Marciello started his GT career with a podium in the Sprint series of the Blancpain GT championship on the Misano track. His suitcase was already packed when he received a call from Mercedes’ sport unit: they needed him in Sepang, where he was to replace another driver in the first race of the Blancpain GT Asian series. His flight for Kuala Lumpur was booked, his mission simple: take the wheel of the Mercedes AMG GT3 no 999 of the team Gruppe M Racing and, together with teammate Hunter Abbot, bring home a good result. Sepang is a perfect fit for Raffaele’s style, who thrives on tracks that combine lots of grip with fast turns: he last raced on it in 2016 (in the GP2 category) and climbed on the podium. Raffaele confirmed his feeling with Sepang during the first free practice session, when he jumped right to the top of the standings. The second session saw the conditions switching back and forth from wet to dry, and Raffaele had to deal with loss of adherence with a GT car for the first time. He did a great job, and despite finding a fair deal of traffic during the timed lap, he was able to reach second place (a mere seven milliseconds from first) and to secure a first line start on Sunday’s race 2. Race 1’s staring position was the result of Raffaele’s teammate performance (he finished sixth) and of a penalty inflicted on the team, which saw the car being pushed back to the 22nd position – the very last. All odds, therefore, were against Raffaele when he got behind the wheel for race one; yet Raffaele rolled up his sleeves and begun an incredible comeback, overtaking his opponents on the outside and surprising them with perfectly timed compression brakings: the result was an outstanding second place and a first place in the Pro-AM class. Not a week has passed since Misano, and Raffaele has added another podium to his GT triumphs – and this time he did it in a spectacular fashion, conquering the hearts of both the spectators and the pundits, who were left impressed by his hunger. In race 2, because of a series of rules that penalise drivers who obtained good results in race 1 (a second place in race 1 automatically creates a 7 second penalty), Raffaele started from the back and was once again the protagonist of a comeback; he sprinted to fourth place before passing the wheel to his teammate, who brought the result home: fourth place and a second place in the Pro-Am category. It was a magnificent debut for Marciello in the Asian series: he showed that he is a fast driver who can keep up a relentless pace and leave his opposition in the dust. The next challenge awaits Raffaele in Monza on April 22nd and 23rd, when he will take part in the first race of the Endurance series of the Blancpain GT series.

Sepang, chiamata last minute e ottima performance!
