Le Mans a bitter disappointment for Raffaele Marciello: the BMW #15 sees the dream slip away after the historic pole position
The 94th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans ended with a below-expectations result for Raffaele Marciello and the crew of the BMW M Hybrid V8 #15 from BMW M Team WRT. After starting the weekend as absolute protagonists, the race on the Circuit de la Sarthe turned into a long chase, undermined by a series of unlucky incidents that prevented the German car from fighting for the top positions.
The weekend had begun in the best possible way. Thanks to an extraordinary lap during the Hyperpole session, the BMW #15 — shared by Ticino native Raffaele Marciello, Dries Vanthoor, and former Formula 1 driver Kevin Magnussen — secured BMW’s first-ever overall pole position at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a historic result for the Bavarian manufacturer and the BMW Hypercar programme.
At the start, Magnussen kept the BMW among the leading positions in the early stages, but as the hours passed the situation grew complicated. During the night, contact with an LMP2 car caused a puncture on the BMW #15, forcing the crew to cover a long section of the circuit in precarious conditions and losing valuable time in the pits. The incident definitively ended the victory ambitions of the car that had started from pole.
From that point on, Marciello, Magnussen and Vanthoor had to run a recovery race, trying to limit the damage in one of the most competitive editions in recent years. With six hours to go, the BMW #15 had dropped to sixteenth place overall, far from the podium fight and the battle for victory involving Cadillac, Toyota, Ferrari and the sister BMW #20.
Despite the disappointment of the final result, the French weekend still leaves some encouraging signs. The pole position secured by Vanthoor demonstrated the potential of the BMW M Hybrid V8 over a single lap, while the pace shown in the early stages of the race confirmed the competitiveness of the Marciello–Magnussen–Vanthoor lineup.
For Raffaele Marciello, the regret remains of a great opportunity missed on the world’s most prestigious circuit — but also the awareness that he can return to fight for outright victory in the upcoming rounds of the FIA World Endurance Championship.

La 94ª edizione della 24 Ore di Le Mans si è conclusa con un risultato al di sotto delle aspettative per Raffaele Marciello e l’equipaggio della BMW M Hybrid V8 #15 del BMW M Team WRT. Dopo aver iniziato il weekend da protagonisti assoluti, la gara sul Circuit de la Sarthe si è trasformata in una lunga rincorsa, compromessa da episodi sfortunati che hanno impedito alla vettura tedesca di lottare per le posizioni di vertice.
Il fine settimana era iniziato nel migliore dei modi. Grazie a uno straordinario giro durante la Hyperpole, la BMW #15 condivisa dal Ticinese Raffaele Marciello , Dries Vanthoor el Ex Formula 1 Kevin Magnussen ha conquistato la prima pole position assoluta della storia di BMW alla 24 Ore di Le Mans, un risultato storico per il costruttore bavarese e per il programma Hypercar BMW.
Allo spegnimento dei semafori, Magnussen ha mantenuto la BMW nelle posizioni di testa nelle prime fasi della corsa, ma con il passare delle ore la situazione si è complicata. Durante la notte, un contatto con una vettura LMP2 ha provocato una foratura alla BMW #15, costringendo l’equipaggio a percorrere un lungo tratto del circuito in condizioni precarie e perdendo tempo prezioso ai box. L’episodio ha compromesso definitivamente le ambizioni di vittoria della vettura che era partita dalla pole position.
Da quel momento Marciello, Magnussen e Vanthoor hanno dovuto affrontare una gara di recupero, cercando di limitare i danni in una delle edizioni più competitive degli ultimi anni. A sei ore dalla conclusione la BMW #15 era precipitata al sedicesimo posto assoluto, lontana dalla lotta per il podio e dalla battaglia per la vittoria che vedeva coinvolti Cadillac, Toyota, Ferrari e la BMW gemella #20.
Nonostante la delusione per il risultato finale, il weekend francese lascia comunque segnali incoraggianti. La pole position conquistata da Vanthoor ha dimostrato il potenziale della BMW M Hybrid V8 sul giro secco, mentre il ritmo mostrato nelle prime fasi della corsa ha confermato la competitività dell’equipaggio composto da Marciello, Magnussen e Vanthoor.
Per Raffaele Marciello resta il rammarico per una grande occasione sfumata sul circuito più prestigioso del mondo, ma anche la consapevolezza di poter tornare a lottare per il successo assoluto nelle prossime gare del FIA World Endurance Championship.
