BITTER RETIREMENT FOR RAFFAELE MARCIELLO AT LE MANS
The 2025 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans has come to an end on the spectacular Circuit de La Sarthe. Raffaele Marciello took part in the world’s most famous endurance race alongside Kevin Magnussen and Dries Vanthoor, driving the #15 BMW M Hybrid V8 for the BMW M Team WRT, continuing his commitment with the team in the Hypercar category of the World Endurance Championship.
This year, the official qualifying format at Le Mans featured three sessions. In the first, car #15 secured second place, advancing to the next round. Marciello took the wheel for Hyperpole 1, once again qualifying for the final phase with a lap time of 3:24.061. Vanthoor then completed the job, placing the team in fourth position, securing a second-row start on the grid.
This edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans was one of the most straightforward in its history, with very few neutralizations. The team chose Magnussen to start the race, and during the early hours, he dropped to eighth position. Marciello was primarily behind the wheel during the night hours — considered the most crucial and delicate phase of the endurance race. The Swiss driver was one of the fastest during his stint, showing excellent race pace that allowed the team to regain positions and climb to fourth, aided by an alternative strategy. Following the race’s only safety car period, Marciello executed a brilliant defense for fourth place against a very fast Ferrari but was ultimately overtaken during a pit stop due to differences in virtual fuel tank energy levels.
Misfortune struck the team in the final hours: first with a double emergency pit stop, made mandatory after having pitted during several full course yellow phases, dropping them to ninth place. Then, with just an hour and a half remaining, they were forced to retire due to a failure in the hybrid cooling system.
Another unlucky Le Mans for Raffaele Marciello, who, despite showing top-five pace, was unable to finish the 93rd edition of the 24 Hours. Marciello remains at 27 points in the drivers’ standings, dropping to 13th place. The next round of the World Endurance Championship will take place at the Interlagos circuit in Brazil on July 13.
In the meantime, having entered all three of the world’s most prestigious 24-hour races, Marciello will be back on track at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife on June 22–23.
AMARO RITIRO PER RAFFAELE MARCIELLO A LE MANS
Sullo spettacolare circuito de La Sarthe si è conclusa l’edizione 2025 della 24 ore di Le Mans. Raffaele Marciello ha preso parte alla gara di durata più famosa al mondo insieme a Kevin Magnussen e Dries Vanthoor, alla guida della BMW M Hybrid V8 #15 del BMW M Team WRT, proseguendo l’impegno che il pilota svizzero ha con il team per il World Endurance Championship in categoria Hypercar.
Da quest’anno, il format delle prove ufficiali di Le Mans ha previsto tre sessioni di qualifica. La prima ha visto il team numero 15 conquistare la seconda posizione e l’accesso alla fase successiva. Marciello ha ereditato il volante per la hyperpole 1, ottenendo nuovamente la qualificazione alla fase finale grazie al tempo di 3:24.061. Vanthoor ha poi ultimato il lavoro issando l’intero team al quarto posto, seconda fila sulla griglia di partenza.
La 24 ore di Le Mans è stata una tra le più lineari della sua storia, con poche neutralizzazioni. Il team ha scelto Magnussen per la partenza, che durante le prime ore di gara è sceso all’ottavo posto. Marciello è stato impegnato soprattutto nelle ore notturne, considerate la fase più importante e delicata della corsa endurance. Il pilota elvetico è stato uno dei più veloci durante il suo stint, mettendo in mostra un ottimo passo gara che ha consentito alla squadra di recuperare posizioni e salire al quarto posto, anche grazie a una strategia alternativa. Dopo l’unica safety car della gara, Marciello è stato autore di una strabiliante difesa per la quarta posizione nei confronti di una velocissima Ferrari, venendo tuttavia sorpassato durante la sosta a causa della differenza dell’energia virtuale del serbatoio.
La sfortuna per il team si è fatta sentire nelle ultime ore: dapprima un doppio pit stop di emergenza, obbligatorio per aver effettuato le soste ai box durante varie fasi di full course yellow, che li ha portati in nona posizione e successivamente il ritiro avvenuto a un’ora e mezza dalla conclusione per problemi al sistema di raffreddamento dell’ibrido.
Un’altra Le Mans sfortunata dunque per Raffaele Marciello che, nonostante un passo all’altezza della top 5, non è riuscito a tagliare il traguardo della 93esima edizione della 24 ore. Marciello è rimasto dunque con 27 punti in classifica piloti, scendendo al 13esimo posto. Il prossimo appuntamento con il mondiale endurance sarà sul circuito di Interlagos, in Brasile, il 13 luglio. Marciello invece, partecipando a tutte e tre le 24 ore più famose del mondo, sarà in pista sul famigerato circuito del Nordschleife il 22-23 giugno.
